Background of the Study
Electronic medical records (EMRs) are digital versions of patients' paper charts, containing the medical history, diagnoses, treatments, and other relevant health information. EMRs are designed to streamline healthcare processes by making patient information easily accessible to healthcare providers. In Nigeria, the adoption of EMR systems has been slow, with many hospitals still relying on paper-based records (Nwachukwu et al., 2023). However, in recent years, several hospitals have initiated the transition to EMRs, driven by the need for improved patient care, better data management, and compliance with global health standards. Niger State, being one of Nigeria’s states with a diverse population and healthcare challenges, offers an interesting context to study the implementation of EMRs.
The move towards digitalization in Nigerian healthcare is part of broader efforts to improve healthcare service delivery through better data management, reduce medical errors, enhance efficiency, and improve patient outcomes. While there has been some progress, challenges such as infrastructure deficiencies, high implementation costs, and resistance to change by healthcare workers have hindered the widespread adoption of EMRs. This study will examine the implementation of electronic medical records in hospitals in Niger State, exploring the barriers, benefits, and the role of EMRs in enhancing healthcare delivery.
Statement of the Problem
The implementation of electronic medical records in Nigerian hospitals, particularly in Niger State, has faced several hurdles, including inadequate infrastructure, insufficient training of medical personnel, and financial constraints. As a result, the effectiveness of EMR systems in improving healthcare delivery remains unclear. Many hospitals have not fully integrated EMRs into their operations, and there is a need to assess whether the adoption of such systems has translated into improved patient care and operational efficiency. This study aims to assess the factors influencing the implementation of EMRs in Niger State hospitals and to evaluate the extent to which EMRs have impacted healthcare outcomes.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hospitals in Niger State that have either implemented or are in the process of implementing electronic medical records. The study will investigate the level of implementation, the challenges faced, and the impact on healthcare services. One limitation of the study is the possibility of incomplete data from hospitals that have not fully transitioned to EMRs. Additionally, the study’s findings may not be generalizable to other states with different healthcare dynamics.
